Networking and UNC

I have a home network with win 2000 pro and win xp pro computers.  i can 
browse shares on each.  i am not able to write to the xp machine using 
\\winxppro\share syntax, however.  I can write to the xp using
C:\do***ents 
and settings\..., but not the UNC syntax.  Please help.
