As several people suspected they might, Microsoft has changed their
mind on the recertification requirements for MCITP certifications.
Originally, you were expected to recertify every three years for these
certifications. However, having a separate policy for MCTS and MCITP
certifications doesn't seem to be working for Microsoft.
Instead, your certifications will remain active until your mainstream
sup****t for the product ends - perhaps 8 to 10 years after it began.
And then, your certification will likely go to a "retired" section of
your transcript.
Trika's blog at Microsoft explains it:

With mainstream sup****t for SQL Server 2000 ending on April 8th, 2008
and SQL Server 2008 being delayed again, a lot of companies are
looking at upgrading to SQL Server 2005. If you get certified (or
already are certified) on SQL Server 2005, you won't need to recertify
within 3 years.
