can't get my mic to work

I downloaded service pack 2 for windows XP and my mic will not work. I have

gone threw all the settings to make sure its not paused or the volume of
the 
mic is not down. I have a brand new mic and it is pluged in. Can someone 
please help me? I have an asus motherboard
