O.k. I think I found the solution

Deleted the adapter from BizTalk admin. Deleted the previous registry
entry 
for the adapter by going into the regsitry.

I created a new Registry file for the adapter using Adapter Registry 
Wizard.Ran the new registry file. Added the adapter again in the BizTalk 
admin. Now it is working.

Still not sure why the adapter registry file which was built by the
Adapter 
Registry Wizard was causing the problem.
