Somewhere I thought the OP said QuickBasic 2.  

Lengths of 2 or 4 could be integers.  Lengths of 4 or 8 could be
floats in probably MS format.  Did QB2 even sup****t IEEE?  

I don't know of any length 16 standard binary format sup****ted by QB2.
