Disabling RANDOMIZE TIMER in a compiled binary executable

by anjogasa@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Apr 30, 2007 at 07:50 AM

I am rewriting simulation software that was originally implemented in
BASIC. The simulation uses an initial RANDOMIZE TIMER for stochastic
elements of the simulation. It is my understanding that without
RANDOMIZE TIMER the basic runtime will generate the same string of
numbers execution after execution. While obviously this is not
preferable behavior, it is ideal for me to be able to validate new
code against the old basic binary executable.

So one thought I had was to try to "erase" the call to RANDOMIZE TIMER
in the original executable. I am not, however, super familiar with
assembly/machine code. Somewhere in the back of my mind I am hoping I
can insert the equivalent of a NOP instruction over the call using a
hex editor, then running the executable would result in deterministic
behavior.

Any suggestions or tips on where to get started would be appreciated.

Anjo
