I get this problem with vista also, how I fixed it was make use all
applications, like Google side bar, ect.. are closed before starting game.
also install dx 6,a,7,be,8, start with dx from game installations, file
then
go to Microsoft download page for the rest. the game works after those
fixes, also if the game does not start you have to set admin,
compatibility
setting [640x840] . also in game icon if using short cut from games
folder,
you have do del under the second line normal commands 2x.1 backspace till
/ageofempires.exe
