Linking to a .dot do***ent

Hi,

I have a link in db which points to (and opens) a word template (.dot).  
Normally when you open a .dot, it opens a standard .doc version of the 
template.  

I have a link and I've typed in the address of the file location.  But,
when 
I click on it it opens the .dot file and not the .doc  

I would like the link to open the .doc version if that is at all possible?
